Hitachi Asia Launches Version 8.5 of JP1 Desktop Management Suite

Solutions provide greater visibility of desktop layer, tighter control of end-user operations, data loss prevention

SINGAPORE — September 8, 2008 — Hitachi Asia Ltd, a leading provider of solutions that enable enterprises to derive maximum business advantage from their IT systems, today launched Version 8.5 of the desktop management solutions in its Hitachi Job Management Partner 1 (Hitachi JP1) suite of integrated systems management solutions.

The latest version of the desktop management solutions — JP1/Software Distribution, JP1/Asset Information Manager and JP1/Client Security Control — includes new features that enable enterprises to, among other benefits, gain greater visibility and control of end-user operations, safeguard sensitive information, and dynamically adjust and enforce IT security policies.

“As enterprises continue to empower their end-users, the client environment becomes more complex to manage and more costly to operate. Recent research also shows more security threats, intentional or otherwise, originating from within the organisation. System assets are now also included in audit and compliance regulatory frameworks. Together, these factors make managing the desktop environment and regulating end-user operations a challenge. Version 8.5 allows enterprises to meet this challenge head-on,” said Mitsumasa Inagaki, General Manager, System Management Solution Division (JP1), Hitachi Asia Ltd.

Compared to earlier versions of the Hitachi JP1 desktop management solutions, V8.5 offers improved operability, support for a wider variety of Microsoft Windows operating systems and anti-virus products, greater automation, enhanced monitoring of the desktop environment, and protection against information disclosure.

Using Hitachi JP1/Software Distribution V8.5, administrators can now acquire logs (operation, file, print and Web access) for each client machine, suppress printing on client PCs, block the use of USB storage media and built-in CD/DVD drives, track hardware and software changes, and disable the launching of unauthorised software. By giving administrators tighter control over what happens at the client level, these features reduce the risks caused by misconduct and errors, enhance security, and strengthen compliance.

New features in Hitachi JP1/Asset Information Manager V8.5 provide for better lifecycle management of IT assets. They include support for diverse software licensing schemes, automatic database maintenance and operating status monitoring, email alerts to expired leases, software underutilisation and other such instances, and an error history log that aids preventive management.

With Version 8.5 of Hitachi JP1/Client Security Control, administrators can manage the security level — Danger, Warning, Caution, or Safe — for each client from a Web browser; various actions can be invoked when a client with inadequate security measures is detected. Also new is the ability to track and display the status of security measures in chronological order for the entire enterprise or for a particular department. This allows administrators to identify at-risk departments and to determine whether security inadequacies are temporary or long-term, thus allowing them to adjust the security policy accordingly.

“All too often, the introduction of new system management applications adds complexity and cost to the IT environment. Version 8.5 of the three Hitachi JP1 desktop management solutions does the opposite, giving enterprises a client environment that is more visible, more manageable, more secure, more current, more consistent and more cost-effective. The enterprise knows what exactly goes on at the desktop level and IT staff and end-users become more productive,” said Mr. Inagaki.

Version 8.5 of JP1/Software Distribution, JP1/Asset Information Manager and JP1/Client Security Control are immediately available from Hitachi Asia Ltd., Value-Added Distributors and authorised resellers.
